Capturing A Maternity Session at one of the most iconic locations in the city: Sunset Cliffs in San Diego.
Never in my career have I laughed so much during a session. This couple was not only fun, but even more so hilarious! We were all smiling ear to ear at times, and found it difficult to not laugh throughout, especially once we found out that Ben is not really a finger guy (see my Instagram reel covering this @erikroanphoto). I can't wish them a bigger congratulations on their upcoming addition to the family!
Why should you choose Sunset Cliffs for your Couple's/ Maternity Session?
What was once a an area kept in secret by the locals, has now blown up into one of the most popular places to take photos and catch a beautiful San Diego sunset. Boasting one of the most beautiful views along the coast, as well as it's diverse landscape, I am always happy to meet my couples at this special location. This area has roughly 2 miles of accessible coastline so finding a spot with less people is never a problem. Around sunset, parking can be slightly tricky but it has never been bad enough to keep me from coming back.
The atmosphere of the area is truly magical. If you are far enough away from people, typically all you can hear is the sound of the waves crashing against the cliffs and the occasional seagull flying overhead. What better of a place to take your partner on a mini date (aka. photos session)?
When to visit Sunset Cliffs?
Due to the vast span of the area, I would honestly recommend coming here any time of the year. I will warn you that the Summer months are definitely busier and parking may be more difficult, but don't let that stop you from soaking in all of the majestic beauty that Sunset Cliffs has to offer.
As far as "time of year" goes, it really depends on what kind of lighting you would prefer for you photo session. April Showers typically turns in to "May Gray' and then "June Gloom", lastly follow by "No Sky July". This four month period has been known to keep the coast relatively cloudy (with a couple of sunny days thrown in there). If you are looking for "Golden Hour" Lighting, I would recommend coming from August-November and if you don't mind a cloudy day (like what is pictured here) then any time from December- July would be ideal. (Keep in mind, these are just general estimates based on usual weather trends in San Diego.)
Things to do after your photo session:
- Head to dog beach to watch all of the dogs run around
- Try one of the many restaurants in the area, My personal favorites are: La Doña (for the best upscale Mexican & amazing cocktails) , Wonderland Ocean Pub (for it's laidback atmosphere and incredible views) , and Raglan Public House (for its delicious New Zealand Inspired food, their burgers are AMAZING!)
- Check out some of the great places to have a drink: OB Brewery (For good beer and great views), Kilowatt Brewing (for great beers and their super cool neon décor), The Holding Company (Great drinks and even better views, also doubles as a music venue)
- Walk around and explore all of the shops
